In his absence

I gazed at her a long moment, well aware of what she wanted from me.

“I’m sorry, girl,” I told her softly, shaking my head at her, “but it’s just you and me now.”

She blinked at me before lowering her head glumly, as if she understood my meaning. I sighed and moved forward to rest my cheek against her soft forehead, hugging her close.

“I know,” I murmured sadly, closing my eyes as my throat constricted for the umpteenth time. “I miss him too.”
